Design Wall Monday–January 31, 2011

Today my design wall has my quilted wall hanging.  After taking the photo I sewed the binding on the front and will get it sewn to the back today.  Also on my design wall are 2 of the 35 blocks I need for the mystery quilt.  I think that is next on my list.

Zipper!

I taught a class yesterday making this little zipper pouch.  So many people are afraid of zippers but they are easy to use in purses and bags.

This pattern is from Atkinson Designs and is called Cash and Carry.  It is fun and easy to make.  There is a variation on the pattern to make a double pouch – one side for cash and the other side for credit cards.  I want to make it soon.

Mystery Quilt and Piecemakers Quilt Progress

Here are the two mystery quilt blocks.  I need another 16 of the top block and another 17 of the bottom one.  I think I am really going to like this quilt.

I got the borders on the Piecemakers quilt.  I hope to quilt it this morning so I can bind it and enter it in a quilt show tomorrow.  Wish me luck!

East Cobb Quilters’ Guild

Today was quilt guild and Gyleen Fitzgerald did the program for us.  Her lecture was delightful and very informative.  She brought many quilts to show us.  Here are some of them.  This first one was her very first quilt.

Here is her most recent quilt.

She has come a long way from using a simple pattern with only three fabrics to using lots of pattern ad lots of fabrics.  Love the scrap quilts!

Gyleen Fitzgerald

Gyleen Fitzgerald was the teacher at a workshop today.  I proctored the class so I was busy helping her sell books and rulers, etc.  I also went and picked up lunch and helped clean up.  It really helps to have someone who is not in the class available to the teacher and today it was me.

She taught the pattern she calls The Quilt of the Century and it features an inset square.  She has a wonderful way of doing what she calls Butterfly Seams.  Here are her samples that she brought to class.

Here are some of the quilts that were worked on today.

What a great pattern and technique to inset the squares.  It was amazingly simple.

Tomorrow she is going to lecture about color.  Based on the quilts she showed today, she should have a lot to share.  Here are a couple of very colorful pineapple quilts she showed today.

As you can tell, she loves scrap quilts.  She cuts 1 1/2 inch strips that she calls trash – there is a great ruler and book so of course I ended up purchasing both.

Customer Quilt–Carolyn

I quilted this quilt for Carolyn about a month ago.  She went on vacation to Australia so I didn’t give it to her right away. I delivered it to her today.  She made this quilt in the retreat last year, using her favorite 30’s fabrics.

I love the scrappy yellows and blues.  What a wonderful quilt.

Here are the fabrics she worked on at last weekend’s retreat. Quite a change from last year.

0111 Mystery 10

A few other people were working on last year’s mystery.  Here are a couple of them.

Mine is still in the “to be quilted” pile mountain.  It is on one of my UFO lists.

Evening Beginning Machine Piecing

The evening group did a wonderful job with their rail fence blocks also.

Here are their nine patches.

Tomorrow I am going to proctor a class for the East Cobb Quilters’ Guild.  The teacher is Gyleen Fitzgerald and she is teaching a workshop on Quilt of the Century.  On Friday she will be giving a lecture at the guild meeting.

Morning Beginning Machine Piecing Class

Here is the homework that the morning class did.  They did an excellent job of making rail fence blocks.  After we trimmed them to size and put them on the design wall.

After admiring the homework, we started making nine patches.  After making a couple of nine patches each, we moved on to nine patch variations.

Didn’t they do a great job?  The evening class is coming up in a few minutes so will post their results later.

Mystery Quilts

I thought I would share some of the blocks made from the mystery quilts over the weekend.  I love seeing people make the same quilt using different colors and fabrics.  It is so interesting how different they all turn out.  Here are a few of them.

Danielle was able to finish all her blocks and here they are on the floor.

Aren’t these going to be beautiful quilts.  The mystery was designed by Debbie Caffrey and I highly recommend her mysteries.  If your guild or other group is wanting to play with a mystery – contact her.
