Design Wall Monday–February 28, 2011

Here is what is on my design wall today – a Wacky Devine Nine made from flannel.

The colors are horrible in the photo as it is very bright and cheerful but it doesn’t look like it here.  One more border and it will be ready to quilt.

While working on other projects, I completed one more of the Moda blocks.  Here is the one I just finished.

Here are the other three.

They are all so different that I am not sure how I can put them together in one quilt.

A Bit of Show and Tell

As usual, there were some wonderful projects shown at guild on Friday.  This first one was a project from the Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims.

This is Ben and his project.  The quilt was started by his wife and completed by him.

This next one is by Carol who does everything by hand.

Alycia made this one out of some black and white squares.

Olwynne made this quilt.

From a Saturday Sampler.

A One Block Wonder.

There were a few more that I didn’t get photos of.  Very inspiring as usual.

Challenge Quilts at ECQG

Yesterday was Challenge day at guild.  This year’s challenge was to make a quilt about your best friend.  Here are the quilts that were shown.

7

Number 1 won as the best use of theme and number 4 won as best quilt.  Number 3 had a large number of votes but they were split between theme and best quilt.

The next challenge was introduced and it is titled “Make Do”.  The basis of the challenge is that you can purchase nothing to make the quilt.  Everything must be made from what you have on hand or what you can trade with someone else.  No going to the quilt shop and no use of kits, regardless of how long they have been in your stash.

It seems to me that a selvage quilt would fit in this new theme very well.

Debit/Credit Wallet

Isn’t this a cute little project?  I am going to be teaching it tomorrow morning at Tiny Stitches.

It is made from just two fat quarters and a small piece of batting (I used fusible fleece).  It only took about an hour to make it, including the quilting of the main piece.

Off to guild this morning.

Final Classes of Beginning Machine Piecing

Yesterday was the final class of the current Beginning Machine Piecing session.  I was pleased that all of the students were able to get their quilt tops pieced and many of them were able to get the first border on.  I think they all know how to measure for the borders and I am looking forward to seeing each of the quilts when finished.  Unfortunately one of the morning students was unable to attend.  Here are the morning quilts.

Then the evening class put together their tops.

As usual I enjoy seeing all the different interpretations of the same quilt in such a variety of fabrics.

Composition Book Cover

Here is a cute cover I made for a composition book.  I found some books that have graph paper in them and love to use them for quilt ideas.  They also make perfect gifts.

Here it is open showing the pockets.

I can’t decide if I actually like the gathered cover or not.  I do know that it isn’t as easy to make as some of the other patterns out there.

Mug Rugs Sent

I mailed my mug rug swap yesterday from the machine at the Post Office, since it was closed for the holiday.  Here are the two that I made.

This first one is made from a Dilly Dally charm pack.

This next one is a simple one made from batik strips.

I haven’t received my package yet so hopefully it will come sometime this week.

Design Wall Monday–February 21, 2011

Here is what it on my design wall today – not much different from last week but there are a few more blocks.  I am waiting for two more packages with a total of four more blocks and then I will be ready to put the top together.

I can see from the photo that I need to do some rearranging of blocks but I will wait until I have them all.

Leader and Ender Project

While working on other projects, I finished another of the leader/ender blocks.  This one is a lot brighter tha the last – I should have an interesting quilt when done.

Name Tags for the Quilt Show Committee

Yesterday was the monthly quilt show meeting and I gave out the name tags that my friends and I made for each committee chair.  We had a sew-in/lunch a couple of weeks ago and then I made a bunch more and Jan put the straps on them.

They are click-it bags and are just large enough to hold a cell phone and a small pad of paper and pencil.  They are all bright colors with the actual bag being black.  They go well with the theme and raffle quilt.

My hope is that at the quilt show, we will be able to reach everyone by phone when necessary and we will be able to hear the phone with it hanging around our necks.  I have asked everyone to wear them at guild meetings so the members learn who the committee chairs are and we can get volunteers along the way.

Another Wacky Devine Nine

It is almost time for shop hop so I am busy making a couple of samples.  The first one is yet another Wacky Devine Nine using wonderful flannel.  Here are a couple of the fabrics.

I have most of the blocks put together.  Perhaps I can finish the center of the top today after the quilt show meeting and before work tonight.

Beginning Machine Piecing–Class 5

Yesterday was the next to last session of the beginning machine piecing class.  The project for the day was flying geese but first here is the homework from the previous week.

We made flying geese two different ways – once with Marti Michell’s ruler and the second time with rectangles and squares.  Here are the results.

Next week we put the quilt top together.

More Bright Stacks

I received blocks from Julie W and Becca for the January Block Lotto.  I just have four more to receive.

These keep getting better and better.

Getting Ready for Shop Hop

The Greater Atlanta Shop Hop is coming the last week of March and we are starting to get ready for it.  We are all going to make a new apron to wear using the Shop Hop fabric.  I plan on making another of “My Neighbors Apron” that I made for Christmas.  Here is the fabric I am going to use.  Everyone at the shop is making their own apron so they will all be different but will feature the shop hop fabric.

The black fabric is the shop hop fabric and has all kinds of Georgia things on it.  You can see the Fabulous Fox Theatre at the bottom center, the Georgia Aquarium in the middle, Masters golf at the top, Centeninnel Olympic park under the rick rack and the soon to be build Southeastern Quilt and Textile Museum near the center.  We are pre-selling the fabric to be picked up at shop hop but were allowed to have enough of it now to make the aprons.

I am teaching the fifth class of Beginning Machine Piecing today – flying geese.

Bee Block

I made a bee block last night and will get it in the mail today.  Here it is.

I hope she likes it.

Since yesterday was valentine’s day, I wore my heart socks that I got for Christmas from my sister Robin.

I have some more bee blocks to make today and need to finish up name tags for the quilt show committee chairs.  We have a meeting on Friday and I would like to give them to them at the meeting.
