Just One Star and Leader/Ender Block

I finally got around to making a couple of stars for Moda’s Just One Star program.  I made these two and put them in the mail yesterday.

While working on these, I finished up block 14 of my Moda leader/ender blocks.

I also finished up two customer quilts and will show them after I deliver them today or tomorrow.

Two More Bee Blocks

I received two more bee blocks from the Let’s Bee Together group.  Both are great.  First is one from Linda.

This next one is from Marta.

These are going to look great when I get them all together.  I think I will put them up on the design wall to admire while I am waiting for the others.

Saturday Sampler Blocks and More

I got two more Saturday Sampler blocks made in the last couple of days.  Here is the February batik house and a floral fantasy block – not sure what month.

I still have a large pile of blocks to work on.  While doing these, I finished another Moda block.  This makes 12 of 20 blocks done. Here it is.

Lastly I thought I would show you a new addition to the shop.  Remember the pink fat quarter lady?  She decided to go reproduction and has a new outfit on.

Everything you see on her is just fat quarters.

Leader/Ender Block 11

While working on my curvy road quilt I finished another leader/ender block.  This one is full of soft colors and prints.

Only eight more before I have to decide what to do with them.

Another Leader/Ender Block–Number 10

Here is my latest leader/ender block.  This is number 10 of 20 from the bag of 2 1/2 inch squares I won a few months ago.  Each block is made from a Moda line and they are all very different.  I am still not sure what I will do with them when they are all made.  I am sure something will come to mind.

Leader and Ender Project

While working on other projects, I finished another of the leader/ender blocks.  This one is a lot brighter tha the last – I should have an interesting quilt when done.

Block Lotto Winner

I was lucky enough to win bright stacks blocks at the Block Lotto and the first ones arrived yesterday.  Here they are.

I decided to keep mine and here they are again.

I made nine and received 3 from Laura.  I still have 18 more coming.  This will make a nice quilt to donate!

Leaders and Enders

While working on the mystery quilt and other projects, I have been using Bonnie Hunter’s leaders and enders method.  Last month I received 20 packs of 2 1/2 squares of Moda fabric from a giveaway by Minick and Simpson. I have started to put together blocks using the packs.  Each pack has 42 squares so I am making blocks that are 6 x 7.  Here are the first two.

I am working on the third set.  I piece 2 square together until I go through the entire pack, then I sew 2 sets of two together 7 times and lastly add the last set of 2 so that I have 7 rows of 6 blocks.  I then iron and take a few minutes to set the rows together.  They then go up on my second design wall to wait for their friends to join them.

Red and Aqua Blocks

I have been using my red and aqua swap blocks for leaders and enders recently and have turned 100 small blocks into 25 larger ones.  I am still doing some pressing but plan to put them up on the design wall later today.

Although this isn’t on my official UFO list, I have been wanting to get this quilt done.  I bought some Bliss floral for a border but might need an inner border also.  I guess I won’t know until the blocks are sewn together.

Weather update:  The ice is almost gone but the snow still has a way to go.  The temperature should stay above freezing all day so we are making progress.

Scrap Bee

I joined two bees this year and worked on my blocks for the Scrap Bee at 15 Minutes Play.  Victoria asked for blocks that used made fabric.  Here is what I came up with. They are ready to mail if I can ever get out of the house.

She specified the red sashing and center yellow square but left everything else up to us.  This is a great way to use up small scraps.

Weather update:  Still frozen outside and the quilt shop is still closed.  My classes have been postponed for a week.  The class is six weeks long and we usually take a one week break during the six weeks.  We will just skip that part.

The sun is out today but the temperature is still below freezing.  We still can’t make it up the hill with the car but maybe tomorrow.

Off to make a block for my other bee.

Design Wall Monday–November 8, 2010

I finally have something new on my design wall but the photo is sort of fuzzy.  Sorry about that.

These are test blocks for a new Saturday Sampler series.  The ones on the left have black and white or white and black polka dot backgrounds and bright scrappy houses with green grass.  The ones on the left are the same blocks but done in black Kona Cotton and a single tone on tone.  They have an Amish look to them.

If we decide to use these, I will need to remake them in the actual fabric we are going to use.  I like them so far.

Beginning Machine Piecing – Class 3

First here are the nine patches that were done last week and for homework.  The first one is the morning class and the second one is the evening class.

The lesson yesterday was log cabin blocks.  Again the first photo is from the morning class and the second one is the evening class.

The log cabin blocks are wonderful.  They really concentrated on all aspects of cutting, sewing and pressing and the results are impressive.

I can’t wait until next week when we work on half square triangles and friendship stars.

Atlanta Modern Quilt Guild Meeting

Sunday was the first meeting of the Atlanta Modern Quilt Guild that I was able to attend.  One of the topics was a quilt that is being made to donate to the Georgia Quilt Museum.  Every guild in the state has been asked to make a quilt.  They will be displayed in the State Capitol in January, auctioned off and then displayed at the Museum when it opens early next year.  After the exhibit, they will be given to the winning bidders.  The auction will benefit the new museum.

Since this is a Modern Quilt Guild, the idea was to make a color block quilt with blocks made from a single color.  Many of the blocks were turned in and put on the design wall.

They are looking good so far.  They are going to be sashed with white.  The organizers are asking for a bed sized quilt so it will be decided how wide the sashing will be when all the blocks are collected.  I am going to quilt it when it is done.

Look at all the different designs for the blocks – some simple and some quite complex but all nice.  I made two of the blocks.

Christmas Block Lottery

Each year at the Allatoona guild we select a Christmas fabric, cut it into fat quarters and sell them to the members for our Christmas Block Lottery.  Each person can make up to 5 12-inch blocks and turn them in for the lottery.  We put a name in the lottery for each block made.  The only rules are that the blocks are 12 1/2 inches when turned in and must incorporate the feature fabric.  They can be pieced, appliqued, anything the maker wants to do.

The fabric was selected last month and the first blocks are being turned in.  Sandra made three of this block, using the fabric for his shirt.  She made five total blocks but this is the one that I loved.

We alternate yearly - usually between traditional and non-traditional fabric.  As you can probably tell from the block, this is a non-traditional year.  The fabric is from Moda’s Twelve Days of Christmas line.

We usually get well over 100 blocks turned in.  They are divided into sets of 12 blocks and the lucky people whose names are chosen get a set.  Sometimes there are a few left over so those are given out at the end, for table toppers or table runners.  Last year I think we had 10 sets of 12 blocks to draw names for plus 3 for a table runner.

Since we never know how many people are going to buy fat quarters, we usually have some left and each winner gets one or two so they can use them in finishing their quilts.

Just another one of the fun things we do in guild.
