Design Wall Monday–January 6, 2014

I have a design bed this morning because it is too large for the design wall.  I have the center of the NYD quilt finished and just need to add plain borders and piece the backs.  Hopefully in the next couple of days.

I hope to get it quilted in the next two weeks – have a quilt on the machine and need to work on a couple other customer quilts before I can dedicate a day or two to this one.

For more design walls, go to Patchwork Times.  Lots and lots of design walls there.

Holiday Party at ECQG

We had a great holiday party at ECQG.  Lots of friends, food and fun.  New officers were elected and the President’s quilt was presented to Claudia for her year of service to the guild.  Ben (our new President) designed the quilt and asked me to quilt it.  I had a lot of fun working on it.

Here are a few photos of the quilt.  I don’t have one of the whole quilt but I am hoping Ben took one and will send it to me.

What a wonderful keepsake for Claudia to remember the year of 2013 and the guild.

Design Wall Monday–November 26, 2012

I know it is late in the day but I haven’t missed a design wall this year so here it is.

I finished quilting the ECQG Raffle Quilt and we got together this morning/afternoon and trimmed it, bound it and got part of the hanging sleeve on it.

It took a while but careful trimming ended up with a very square quilt.  Pretty amazing for a quilt made by 50+ people.

Here it is with finished binding.

You can see the binding in this last photo.  The back is another Kaffe print that is yellow with large flowers on it.  It is beautiful.  I forgot to get good photos of the quilting up close but will do that next time I see the quilt.

Quilt for CCYA

The East Cobb Quilters’ Guild made a beautiful quilt for donation to CCYA – Center for Children and Young Adults.  They have a large fundraiser every March and auction many wonderful things.  Late last year we were asked to make a quilt for the auction.  Many members of the guild helped with the quilt and it was given to me to quilt.  It was amazingly flat and square and a pleasure to quilt.

Here it is, all finished.

Circle of Lights overall

It is a large quilt – about 100 inches square.  It is based on a Judy Niemeyer pattern called Crown of Thorns.  Judy kindly gave us permission to use her pattern.  It is mostly paper pieced and is beautiful!  You can’t really see my quilting but here a couple more photos that show a little of it.

Our version of the quilt is called Circle of Light – good name don’t you think.

Happy Fourth of July

4th of July Quilt

I hope everyone has a wonderful Fourth of July.  I will be working at the quilt shop.  If you are in the Atlanta area, stop by Tiny Stitches in Marietta and say hello.

The quilt I am showing was made several years ago but I still like it.  It is one of the first quilts I quilted on my longarm.  I was brave (or stupid) enough to use red thread.

UFO Finished–Watermelon Quilt

A couple of years ago my sister and I made watermelon quilts while in Las Vegas.  It was one of my many UFOs but it is done now.

As you can see, it is a very simple quilt.  Just large rectangles of three fabrics.  It would be a great picnic quilt – if I every went on a picnic.

Here are a couple of close up photos of the quilting.

I quilted it with a simple allover feather design.

Design Wall Monday–January 10, 2011

Well, I am late but I do have something to show besides snow.  I completed the top for the New Year’s Day longarm class finally.  Here it is on the design couch.

Here is a close up photo of one of the blocks.

Cindy suggested solid or reads solid fabrics so that the stitching will show.  She also suggests using contrasting thread but I haven’t decided yet on using one or two different threads.  I just have to piece the backing and cut out the templates and it will be ready to quilt.

Modern Quilt Guild Meeting

Today was the monthly meeting of the Atlanta Modern Quilt Guild.  I took the donation quilt and hung it up for everyone to admire.

It really turned out great and I think represents the modern movement very well.  Here are a couple of close ups.

The direction given to the members was to make a single color block.  I love all the different designs that were used.  With the wide white sashing, it allows each block to shine while complimenting its neighbors.

Pam took the quilt home to add the binding and sleeve and it will be ready to hang in the State Capitol building on January 31.

The rest of the day at the quilt shop was very busy.  I think all the quilters heard about the weather report for snow and ice over the next couple of days and came in to get the fabric equivalent of milk, bread and eggs so that if they are going to be stuck at home, they will have plenty to stitch with.

The weather report is still for 2-4 inches of snow and then sleet and freezing rain.  That would be bad anywhere, but here in the Atlanta area, it is a guarantee for disaster.  I am glad I have no reason to leave the house for the next day or two.

UFO Update

Nancy selected UFO #3 which is the watermelon quilt.  I bought a twin batting to use.  I think I have more of the watermelon rind fabric to use for binding so the actual quilting is the only think to do on this one.  I have been thinking of the quilting and think I will do a different freehand design in each of the three fabrics.  It will be simple but interesting.

Judy selected UFO #6 and I lucked out here.  I got it out this morning and discovered it already had one border on it and the fabric for the second border was with it.  So I all I need to do is add the second border and it will be ready to quilt.

Both of these UFO’s will be easy to finish so hopefully I will start out the year will a successful month – I will report back when if these get finished this month.

I worked yesterday so didn’t get anything done.  I am taking an online longarm class from Cindy Roth at Longarm University and it was yesterday.  Fortunately, the class materials are available for 60 days so I will be able to complete the class.  The first thing that needs to be done is to piece the quilt top that we will be quilting.  I don’t quite have it ready but almost.  Here are some of the blocks.

Cindy wants us to use mostly solid or tone on tone fabrics since the focus of this quilt is on the quilting, not the fabric.  I chose lime green (surprise!) but added blue for the second color.  I should be able to finish the piecing after work this afternoon.

One more thing – Sue took the Beyond Beginners class on Monday and had her top completed on Friday.  Here she is with it.

It is now in my longarm room waiting its turn to be quilted.
