ECQG Quilt Show Entries

I am in charge of the Quilt Show Entries and the postmark deadline was yesterday.  I had 35 envelopes stuck in my mailbox last night, along with several entries that were delivered to me at the store.  I am still in process of entering all the data into the database – a big job.

I thought I would post photos of my three entries.  First is Easy Street.

Next is Winter Wonderland

and finally Dresden Sky.

When I first received the patterns and threads, I debated with myself about what I wanted to make.  I really loved the chair design so decided to do it but still didn’t decide what to actually make from it.  After I finished the embroidery, I still couldn’t decide.  I had one of the little candy packs (2 1/2 inch squares) of Homecoming by Sweetwater so decided to put a small border on the piece.

The net result of all this babbling is that I am still not sure what I am actually going to make with it – probably a pillow.  It may need an additional border to make it large enough.  I don’t have enough squares to do another row, but could probably find scraps that would work.

Isn’t it cute!  I love the colors and the design and everything.  It was really fun to stitch.

The Giving Quilt - Giveaway

I was contacted by Mary Pomponio from Plume Books.  They are publishing Jennifer Chiaverini’s The Giving Quilt early in April.  I bought the book as soon as it came out and really enjoyed it – as usual.  Mary sent me two books and some pins to give away.  I have read all of Jennifer’s books except Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker, which is sitting here waiting for me.

If you are interested in receiving one of the books or pins, leave a comment on this post.  For fun, tell me what your favorite quilt is that you gave away.  Is it one you gave to a charity, to a friend, to a family member?  Is there a story behind it?

I think my current favorite is the Red Socks Quilt for my friend Danielle.

I will choose winners using the random number generator on Sunday, March 31 in the evening.

Good luck – wonderful book and lovely pins.

Design Wall Monday–March 25, 2013

I finished 7 Swoon blocks at the retreat and put them up at my design wall this morning.  Still have two more blocks to finish although I have all the parts made – lots of half square triangles and flying geese.  Hopefully I can get it finished soon.

I am going to be busy this week entering data from all the quilt entries for our upcoming quilt show.  The deadline for entries is this next Saturday.

Red Top Retreat - Day 4

It is the last day of retreat and I don't think I will finish all the blocks for Swoon. I am currently working on number 7 of 9.

Red Top Retreat - Day Three

More of the same. I am surprised how long each Swoon block takes. I am working on the 4th one. I am really liking how they are turning out.

My collection of bowties are growing also.

Day 2 of Red Top Retreat

We survived day one. On to day two.

I spent quite a bit of time yesterday cutting up scraps. I refilled my box of leaders/Enders and cut a lot of 2 1/2 in squares to add to that box. I used up the leftover bits from the 100 strips quilt and the leftover fabric from the goodie bags.

I hope to get several blocks made today.

The first two photos are of my design wall and the rest are from others.

Design Wall Monday–March 11, 2013

Today on my design wall is a Shop Hop quilt waiting for binding.

There are 10 shops on the Shop Hop and if you spend $30 at each shop, you will be given a packet of 10 strips.  Each strip is 2 1/2 x 21.  I took all 100 strips and put them together in this quilt, along with a couple of yards of the bright floral fabric.  At each shop, you will also get a copy of the pattern for their quilt.

Here is another quilt that will be at Shop Hop later this week.  Cathy made this one.

I need to write up the pattern for this in time for the Shop Hop.

Nancy Drew Blog Hop–My Day!

The Nancy Drew fabric came in the shop a couple of months ago and I was immediately attracted to it but managed to avoid buying any.  I helped a couple of customers design quilts using the fabric but was able to leave it all at the shop.  Then I read about the Blog Hop and immediately signed up.  I bought the panel first and waited for inspiration to hit.  I thought about an iPad cover, a Kindle cover, a tote bag and finally decided to make a small quilt.

I cut apart the panel and put a border around each of four of the book covers. At that point, it needed something else so back to the shop and I bought some white to put a narrow border on and some of the book fabric for the top and bottom.  At that point, it still needed something so back to the shop again.  I bought black for a final border.  I forgot to mention that I had bought a border but of course it didn’t work out so it went on the back.  It wasn’t enough so I filled in with one of the tone on tone fabrics in the collection.

I got it quilted Wednesday, just in time to post it.  I didn’t get the binding on but it is ready and will be finished tomorrow.

I quilted it with an overall swirl using a multi-colored bright King Tut.

I have such great memories of Nancy Drew books as a child.  My aunt Ida had the entire collection and I used to read one or two every time we visited.  I recently reread the first book – it was used as a decoration at the shop and was still interesting.  I wonder how many of us grew up wanting to be Nancy Drew.

Be sure to check out all of the other Nancy Drew projects today.  Here is the list.

Secret Project Not Secret Anymore

We have been working on a secret project over the past few weeks.  Yesterday was the end of the secret.  I have mentioned my friend Danielle before, along with her belief that red socks make you feel better if you are sick.  She is undergoing radiation for a brain tumor so the natural thing to do is make her a quilt – a quilt of red socks.  Not sure if I mentioned that she grew up in Boston.  That matters because of the name of the quilt and label.

Here is Danielle under the quilt Monday afternoon.

Here it is from the front.

0313 Danielle's Quilt

We used the leftover fabric from Bill’s sock monkey quilt for the borders and received lots of red sock blocks.  I quilted it with hearts and loops.

We are all wearing red socks, along with Danielle and of course prayers are always welcome.

Design Wall Monday–March 4, 2013

My design wall had my Nancy Drew quilt in progress on it but it can’t be revealed until Thursday so I put this project up to take a photo.  I am working hard on it but it will take a long time to actually show any significant progress.

The color is a little better in the second photo.  It is on the floor with a lot of sun coming in the front door where Chula is laying in a sun spot.  She loves the sun and especially the morning sun coming in the glass door.

When this grows up, it will hopefully look like this.

As you can see, I have a long way to go.  I have lots of hexies basted to the papers and am working in the evenings on sewing the rows together.

For more design walls, go to Patchwork Times and come back here on Thursday to see my Nancy Drew project.

Face Quilt

Look at this wonderful quilt.  It was made by the members of a church quilting group.  At the East Cobb Quilters’ Guild we have a new challenge for this year – All About Me!  We are asking that members make a quilt that includes their face.  This is a great example.
